Dubai: Culture and Policies

Dubai, like any other country, has carved a rich culture within their society and history. Some of the most promising landmarks which lie within the city are now known throughout the world. Therefore, it is not only important that one visits the place but also understand its diverse uniqueness and why it should be acknowledged a treasure. Dubai has a multicultural and diverse society. Because of the different ethnics groups which came into the city, the homogenous community was industrialized. Despite of how diverse the population of Dubai has become, studies show that there is a minor and infrequent episodes of tensions which are reported.          Holidays in Dubai are most likely well-patterned with the Muslim calendar. Some of the major holidays would include: National Day, celebrated on the second day of December, which marks the legal formation of UAE; Eid al Fitr which is the last day of Ramadan.
Entertainments that open up annually like the Dubai Summer Surprises and the Dubai Shopping Festival attracts over four million travelers or visitors across the globe which tends to generate insurmountable revenues. Gigantic shopping malls that flood the city like the Mall of Emirates, BurJuman, Ibn Battuta Mall and Deira City Center also tend to attract people from different parts of the world.
The Dubai cuisine’s diversity is well reflected in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the society. Arabian food is well known and is very much famous. What’s more interesting is that the cuisine varies from small diners to upscale restaurants bound in different hotels. Chinese and fast food are also popular and are pretty much available. Pork consumption is not well-tolerated by the natives although it is separately sold to tourists in some parts of the city. Alcoholic beverages are not prohibited though it is also regulated in such a way that only tourists and visitors who requests are the ones granted. To be able to consume alcohol, a liquor permit must be issued.
Entertainment in Dubai is almost the same with the entire world population for Bollywood and Hollywood are both in demand. Annually, the city hosts the celebrated Dubai International Film Festival which entices celebrities to join coming from the Arab cinema and even the International field. When it comes to music, Dubai is actively participating with famous musicians like Diana Haddad, Celine Dion, Elton John, Aerosmith, Phil Collins and Santana having them perform within the city. Another major festival which gathers Arabs and visitors is the Dubai Desert Rock Festival which features music from rock to metal artists.
Sports which are most popular in Dubai are cricket and football. The city hosted several matches dueling India and Pakistan. In the Dubai Sports City, two new grass grounds will be developed. The city also hosts tennis and golf tournaments which tend to attract different famous sport stars coming from other countries. After the sun sets, there’s the nightlife. Dubai is widely known for bars and clubs that are mostly located inside hotels because of the liquor law implementation. In a recent survey made by the New York Times, Dubai was recognized as one of the main travel choices for partying in the year 2008.

Alcohol in Dubai

There have been speculations about rules and regulations governing the intake of alcohol in Dubai. For an establishment to be allowed to serve alcohol, it should obtain a permit which will be attached within its vicinity. Without the permits, it is not permissible that a particular club sells alcohol to either resident or tourist. Grounds for not observing the law is punishable by the government of Dubai.Because of Dubai being popular with the nightlife, a lot of tourists expect that liquor will be served in any establishment that they enter into. But that is a misconception although adherence to the law will not get you into trouble. Rules regarding alcohol are as follows:

1. A business establishment or venues for drinking should have with them permits to serve or sell alcohol or else consequences will be imposed.
2. Alcohol is prohibited to be sold during religious holidays celebrated by Dubai. Even in daylight hours of Ramadan and non-Muslims, alcohol will not be provided.
3. Drinking of alcohol in public places is strictly a no-no; whereas there is a zero-tolerance regulation on driving drunk. If anyone is caught on a head-on collision and was found out that the one driving is under the influence of alcohol, that person will stay for a month or more inside prison and pay a fine.
4. Alcohol is not sold in supermarkets; only non-alcoholic beverages are allowed. Therefore alcohol can only be bought from a licensed outlet mentioned by the government of Dubai. This will ensure that people will adhere to the policy of Dubai.
5. When visiting bars who are authorized to sell alcoholic beverages, it is a must to carry an identification card so that the management will tolerate you drinking alcohol. Minors who are considered having the age of 21 below are not allowed to go into bars.
So far, alcohol is very much available to non-Muslims in all hotels and bars within Dubai. Some of the bars and clubs that allow drinking alcohol are the following:          Clubs like the Planetarium is housed for its stylish London accent. Ramada Hotel and Scream are warehouse-type venues which give out some of the latest scene in music to their ongoing crowds. Astoria Hotel has become an institution for club fanatics for it creates a mainstream choice of different kinds of music and shelters them with a restaurant wherein a live band plays.

Bars

A Rooftop Swimming Pool which is located at the top of Hilton Dubai Creek has a small bar but entails visitors to appreciate the beautiful sunset. The Terrace Bar, located inside Park Hyatt has a bar that touches the Creek. This is very much applicable for couples who would want to have a quiet, fine-dining time together because light music is played on the background. 360 degrees is a new addition to the Jumeirah Beach Complex. This location has an open bar which accumulates the outstanding views of the beach hotel. The Sky View bar which is inside Burj Al Arab has live bands – both international and local although reservations must be made before one can enter because of the demand in seating capacity. For those who are planning to spend their vacation in Dubai and wants to enjoy inside bars and clubs, it is very much advisable that one is identified as a non-Muslim before barging into drinking.

Driving Around Busy Dubai

As a stranger, visiting a particular place puts up much stress and excitement. To make traveling easier, it is better that one has basic transportation in order to get around town more conveniently. Coming into Dubai, you must first know the rules of their traffic in order to get along well with the community and the regulations.           There is a standardized driving period in Dubai though sometimes, it gets to become abysmal. According to studies, Dubai has one of the highest death toll percentage related to car accidents or particularly the ones that happen on the highway. This is precipitated and otherwise exacerbated by the powerful resistance of luxurious and expensive cars who entitles their owners to run their cars like crazy.             Because of this problem, traffic regulations are now implemented to answer the call of driving issues in Dubai. Some of the new traffic rules and regulations are the following:
•    There will now be a fine of 20,000Dhs and a year’s stay in jail for those who will be caught drunk driving. That is just the minimum. This is the same rule when it comes to having a hit-and-run. Driving without appropriate license or a vehicle that is not licensed for will be penalized. The penalty has a minimum of 500Dhs and being in jail for about three months. Majority of fines regarding traffic offenses are increased.
•    Credit cards are not longer acceptable as payment for petrol stations like EPPCO, EMARAT and ENOC.
•    Dubai police will adhere to using radar guns to be able to find out if there is a violation to the rule of keeping the speed to a minimum (60km/hr). This was not yet enforced.
•    Owners of vehicles who give consent to unlicensed drivers to use their car will be penalized. This will include tourists who have no United Arab Emirates license.
•    For those who want to exchange their foreign license to be able to acquire a Dubai license, he or she must have at least 21 driving lessons and pass the driving test.
Driving in standard
Typically, cars in Dubai are being driven left-handedly and traffic is expected to stay on the right side of the road.
Noting driving hazards
If you think camels are the main transportation fare, that would be unlikely because they are now seldom seen inside the vicinity of the city. On the other hand, camels are still considered dangerous due to the fact that camels don’t understand traffic rules and policies and therefore will not submit to any of it. If one accidentally hits a camel, it’s the driver’s fault. That is why, it is much better that camels are kept outside the city to save their lives as well. The dilemma when hitting a camel is that it is very much expensive. Aside from worrying about the front portion of your car, you would also worry about how to pay the owner of the camel. You have to remember that animals tend to topple down the road and move pretty fast. That is why; you have to take caution when driving. To be able to enjoy your stay in Dubai, you have to make sure that everything is under control most especially the way traffic goes. In this manner, driving around Dubai wouldn’t be much of a worry.

Getting the Best Holiday Experience in Dubai

Going on a holiday? Then plan it in Dubai. Here, you are to experience a year-long celebration of cultural activities, magnificent sights and shopping galore. Dubai is located within the vicinity of United Arab Emirates along the Persian Gulf. Having this kind of geographical coordinates, Dubai is considered as one of the top tourist spots in the world. And because the locales are friendly enough, one will not hesitate to ask for directions and specific instructions on the sites that are worth the visit.
Before leaping into the journey, you must first have a worthy companion along with you – a map. This will never let you down especially when getting some credible instructions. You will be able to save big time on your tour budget because instead of purchasing an accommodation for inclusion in a bus tour, you are entitled to go around town on your own and at the same time make you feel a thrill of excitement and adventure. But you have to be reminded that official city maps don’t show famous tourist destinations. It will only show you the general view of the city. You might as well research through the internet on the specific location of the tourist spot.
Located at the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, Dubai comprises part of the United Arab Emirates. If you are entertaining any thoughts of visiting a place where Islam culture is deeply cherished and maintained yet at the same time providing tourists a reason to stay, then Dubai is for you. Being in Dubai isn’t just seeing the sights but its mingling with the locales and appreciating its rich ethnicity that’ll make you warm up.
What drives people to go to Dubai is how much the place have preserved the quality of life and restored the beauty of it. The place provides its visitors a once in a lifetime experience that entails them to experience magnificent structures like mosques and skyscrapers soaring high in all its grandeur. Subtropical locations provide travelers the opportunity to relax and have fun. And because English is commonly spoken within the area, communication is a breeze.
Here are some enjoyable things to do when visiting dubai:

Visit Jumeirah

Jumeirah Mosque is most beautiful especially during sundown. Its spectacular views of the different buildings are painted amidst the sky. If you would want to tour the area of the mosque, it is better than one goes at daylight. As implemented, tours within the area will begin at ten in the morning from Sunday until Thursday. Here, the family will enjoy immensely and at sunset, couples will be amazed with magnificent structural revelations.

Stroll through parks

Both pleasurable and invigorating, walking through Dubai’s wonderful parks will help the family enjoy an easy morning. There are numerous parks to go to. Some feature scenic train rides, areas where children can frolic, swim, listen to soothing music and enjoy barbecues. There are also sheltered lagoons and beaches wherein the family can spend a day or two. Some parks require entry fees while others only allow children and women to enter on a specific day.

Visit Creekside Park

What’s entertaining about this is place is its calm ambiance due to its botanical gardens that allow visitors or travelers to see and discover different plant species. Entry fees are also imposed although the amount wouldn’t even matter once you have experienced the scenery that is worth every single cent.

Go shopping

A trip in Dubai wouldn’t be complete without a little dose of shopping. Dubai is known throughout the world on having some of the most enormous and modern malls which are located in self-contained areas. There are varieties of retailers that allow you to purchase items at really low prices. While shopping, there are different activities that your children can enjoy. Say for instance the Mall of Emirates where it offers indoor skiing whereas the name of the place is Ski Dubai. There is an indoor rink where the family can put their roller-blade talent to the test; this can be found in Wafi City. The kids, as well as the parents wouldn’t regret this kind of experience.

Make a turn at The Creek

Strolling along the inlet cuts of The Creek will families experience dining in different open-restaurants located at the lining of the banks. This is also great for couples to view the skyline of Dubai.

Stop at the museum

A tour wouldn’t be complete without dropping by at one of the Dubai’s priced possessions – the Dubai Museum. Here, you would understand history of the place including artifacts and ancient people recognized long ago.
Dubai is the land of a million things to do and discover. Aside from shopping and having fun while dining in some of the most expensive restaurants and destinations, here are some of the many reasons why Dubai is considered as one of the main tourist attractions in the world.

Dune bashing

Also known as desert safari, dune bashing is done by riding an SUV with a desert driver specialist. It’s like riding on a rollercoaster; the desert driver will give you the time of your life by surfing the SUV through sand dunes. After which, you will be able to enjoy sundown from a vantage point so strategic. The journey will end in a lavishing dinner together with dance and music to be able to complete the entire course of the trip. If you wanted to experience hard core experience, you might want to settle for dune bashing till you get carsick and throw up. That would be exciting and will put your stomach to the test.

Skiing

Before, this was not possible but now, Dubai has one of the largest ski centers located inside the Mall of the Emirates which offers both snowboarding and skiing. For an indoor area, the slopes are large enough to accommodate skiers. Equipments are readily available for renting. The temperature within the area is about negative four degrees Celsius which is cold enough to bring your tendons to its freezing point. If you were not ready for the ride that would be fine because the area supplies almost everything the moment you enter although some equipment is being sold. Two hours of skiing or snowboarding can cost about Dhs170.

Sand, Sea, Shore

Dubai owns some of the sandiest and whitest beaches known across the globe. Because of which, opportunities to test the water is being offered in resorts and beaches. Temperatures of beach water would range from 22 degrees Celsius during winter season and 35 degrees Celsius during summer time. You have to expect that beaches are quite salty which means that a little dip can cause instant tan. Because of some offshore construction, diving activities were put to a limit. If one wishes to mingle with marine life, there is an hour and a half journey to Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Sharjah enclave wherein one can dive into the depths of its water and appreciate the coral reefs which tend to support wide-range marine life.

Cruise

Dubai creek serves as the foundation for Dubai’s existence. Its ports used to serve trading vessels coming from different parts of the globe including the Middle East, Africa and India. Now, some of the old culture regarding shipping still exists. When in a Dubai Creek Cruise, one can go round the area and fascinate one’s self in some of the oldest and original buildings during the olden times. Some of which are the defense structures and custom house.

Sand golfing

Sand golfing is one kind of sport that is typical of Dubai. If you are getting bored with the traditional way of playing golf, then try it with sand.

Hot air balloon

Best done during early sunrise and sunset, riding a hot air balloon gives tourists the opportunity to be mesmerized with the Dubai mountains and dunes of the desert. This is more appreciated by kids who would love to see the entirety of Dubai.

Top Cities for a European Holiday

If it’s your first time to take a vacation in Europe, here are five cities you must include in your itinerary.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Holland

If you visit Amsterdam in the months of April to May, you’ve come at the best part of the year to see the country’s famous tulips in full bloom. Amsterdam is also a biker’s paradise; you can go anywhere anytime with two wheels. For art and history lovers, there’s the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and the Royal Palace. Try dining at the Indonesian rijsttafel and check out Reguliersdwarsstraat for the hottest night scene.

David

Florence, Italy

After viewing Michelangelo’s David, you can proceed to Duomo and enjoy scenic views if you climb up the dome of Brunelleschi or the bell tower of Giotto, go shopping and take pictures on the Ponte Vecchio, delight in great works of Renaissance arts in the various museums in Florence, and of course visit any number of restaurants lining the city to have a taste of authentic Italian cuisine. You never know what lasagna or pizza truly tastes like until you’ve eaten it in Italy.
Rome

Rome, Italy

After worshipping in the Vatican, you should also check out Testaccio and the various nightclubs the Eternal City has to offer. Everything in Rome is a must-see so make sure you prepare for a good day’s amount of walking. Rome is also a shopper’s haven so take your time looking around or you might end up overspending.
Venice

Venice, Italy

For couples wishing to immerse themselves in their feelings of infatuation or love, they should head down to Venice, an antique, car-free city with love in the air 24/7. If you visit on February, letting go of all your inhibitions is the only way to enjoy Carnevale, the city’s most famous festival. Besides taking gondola rides and stealing kisses in pitch black canals, make sure you check out the Doge Palace as well.
 Westminter

London, England

No European vacation is complete without a trip to the most famous English city of all. London is a haven for art lovers, history buffs, and Broadway fans. It’s a terribly expensive place to go to, but it’s also very tourist-friendly because everyone speaks English.
Westminister and Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, Tate Modern are must-see places. If you’re an avid historical romance reader, you shouldn’t forget to drop by Hyde Park and walk the same paths along Serpentine Lake that your favorite fictional characters must have used.
Madrid

Madrid, Spain

Enjoy works of Picasso and other great Spanish artists in Madrid’s Reina Sofia and Prado. Indulge in rich Spanish cuisine in tapas and upscale restaurants. Madrid is Europe’s answer to New York and you won’t lack for entertainment at anytime of the night.
Louvre

Paris, France

If you love living the good life, the French capital is definitely the place to be. Summers in Paris are exciting, but make sure you’re prepared for how congested the city can be. Springtime is supposedly the ideal time to visit, but in truth, Paris is lovely all-year round.
Besides checking out the Eiffel Tower and Louvre, Paris also has the Montparnasse to offer for jazz lovers and countless cafes and restaurants to give you a solid introduction to French cuisine. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you should also check out the catacombs and see a whole new – dark – side to Paris.

Three of the Most Romantic Holiday Destinations in Europe

Many of the cities in Europe are famous for being the dream destinations for lovers - aside from being famous for its rich culture and art that you can explore.  The architecture, the ambience, the language, the food, the music, the culture and even the little nooks and crannies here can present unlimited possibilities for romance and love.  Here are some of the best picks for a romantic European holiday destination:

 Paris

Well, it’s  probably no surprise that the City of Lights is the very first holiday destination mentioned here.  Paris is the city of art, culture and romance.  For some reason, the way the city has been designed to look makes you feel that it’s Valentine’s Day everyday.
City of Paris
Instead of hurrying up from one destination to the next, try to give way a little to your lazy side.  Spend a day in one of the city’s lovely parks, take a stroll in Montmartre or walk the streets in the St. Germain des Pres.  Don’t forget the Latin Quarter and the Jardin des Plantes and the Jardin du Luxembourg.  Or you could take your place in one of the many cafes that line Rue de Buci.  You could spend hours and hours on end here seated across the table talking.  Of course, the Eiffel Tower is unforgettable at sunset and well into the hours of the night when darkness hangs over the lights of Paris.
Just a warning, though: like love, Paris can be overwhelming for the overly enthusiastic and over-indulgent.  Try to keep the romance down a notch and you’ll both be able to explore the city and get to know each other better.

Venice

As one of the most romantic cities in the world, the city of Venice offers you one of those few opportunities to explore its major attractions from a vantage point that showcases it best: the water.  Instead of taking a walk during your first day, go and hire a gondola so you and your significant other can glide across the water in relative peace.

City of Venice

If the gondola isn’t an option (during certain times of the year, the waterways can get congested with them), try the vaporetto.  It’s a small boat that is capable of transporting groups of people across and along the water.  The ride, while public, can be very romantic, as long as you choose your route well.  Get on the ground at certain stops for a sip of cappuccino or for lunch.
Go ahead and wander – Venice is supposed to be explored that way and it can be particularly romantic.  At sundown, when it’s time for dinner, make sure you head to the Rialto, where some of the city’s best restaurants are located.

Rome

One of the most romantic Hollywood movies was inspired by this city (Roman Holiday starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn), so there really is no reason why you shouldn’t find your own romantic Roman holiday here.
City of Rome
Rome is a city built for lovers – the tables at its cafes are designed for intimate exchanges, its wines are heady and the market is alive with blooms.  You could even make a wish and hope for it to come true with a simple toss of a coin.  And yes, you could pledge forever (or hope for it) with the Bocca dela Verita or Mouth of Truth.
When in Rome and looking for romance, don’t go for the obvious.  Seek out the city as you would a mystery and since there are two of you, who knows what sorts of discoveries you will be able to find?  This favorite European holiday destination has plenty to offer and won’t run out of anything soon.

What to Bring For A Holiday Vacation in Europe

Pack lightly but efficiently for your upcoming trip to Europe using these tips:

 Clothing According to Climate

An extra sweater, a light raincoat, and a compact umbrella will get you anywhere in Europe, but additional changes to your wardrobe could better prepare you for the varying weather of this lovely continent.

Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Finland make up Northern Europe. This region has the best summers in the continent, not too hot but not too cold either. Winters can be quite harsh, but never extremely so, especially when you head to its southern areas. This is also the place where you can witness and experience the Midnight Sun, a phenomenon which keeps the sun on sight 24/7 for the duration of the summer.
travel essentials

Climate varies a lot in Eastern and Central Europe, which is made up by Ukraine, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Germany, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Austria. Summers may be warm to cool while winters are humid, cloudy, and can be moderate to cold.

Luxembourg, Ireland, Holland, France, the UK, and Belgium make up Western Europe. This region has mild winters but experience a considerable amount of rain. It also has moderate summers, but they get cooler as you head north.

Finally, you can enjoy the hottest, not to mention driest, summers if you move down to Mediterranean and Southern Europe, which consists of Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Malta, Italy, Greece, the southern region of France, Cyprus, and Croatia. Spring and fall brings in rain while winters are quite mild.

Books

Phrase books in non-English speaking countries are a must; knowing the right way to say ‘hello’, ‘good morning’, and ‘how much’ can get you a long way. Having guidebooks or even just small travel maps with you are a must; you’re less likely to waste time looking for things to do, places to visit, and wondering which lanes are two-way.

Converters

Not all European accommodations can offer converters for whatever electronic gadgets and chargers you’ve brought with you. It’s better to have one or two converters with you to ensure that your mobile phone, camera, and laptop are fully charged at all times.

Pocket Sewing Kit

Even if you don’t know how to sew, crises have a way of making you acquire new skills. A sewing kit can save torn buttons and other clothing mishaps, preventing you from the unnecessary expense of buying new clothes.

Toiletries

In the interest of hygiene and convenience, it’s best to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste, travel-sized soaps, shampoos, and shaving kit, and extra sets of medications.

Daily Essentials

Your personal care kit should include a hand sanitizer, moisturizer, sun block, lip balm, mosquito repellent, combs and clips, basic makeup like powder and mascara, napkins, panty liners, and decongestant.

Take a laundry kit with you even if you’re staying in hotels and resorts. It should include travel detergents, a sink stopper, a braided clothesline, several clothesline clips, and a travel iron.

Emergency Essentials

If you have vision problems, make sure to take with you an extra set of disposable contact lenses as well as an extra pair of glasses if you have any. Pills for motion sickness, diarrhea, and indigestion should also be included in your first-aid kit.

Travel Essentials

Lastly, make sure you have an adequate amount of cash with you as well as all your ID, credit, and ATM cards. Double-check to ensure your travel papers, plane tickets, and reservation sheets are complete. Don’t forget your driver’s license and passport!
